How to Smoke Shatter — Four Methods, Ranked
How to Smoke Shatter
Four ways to consume it, what each actually costs, and an honest warning about the one everybody tries first.
The short version
A dab rig is best, a dab pen is easiest, sprinkling it in a joint works, and putting it on a hot knife belongs in 2005. Start with a piece the size of a grain of rice — shatter runs 60–90% THC against 20–30% for flower.
First: how strong this actually is
Good flower tests 20–30% THC. Shatter runs 60–90%. That is three to five times the concentration, and a dab the size of a grain of rice can carry more THC than an entire joint.
If you have only ever smoked flower, treat your first dab as a completely new experience. Tolerance transfers poorly, and the onset is immediate rather than gradual.
Not sure how shatter differs from budder, live resin or diamonds? Our comparison guide covers the whole shelf.
Method 1 — A dab rig (best results)
The proper way, and the one that actually tastes of something.
You need a rig, a nail or banger, a torch and a dab tool. Heat the banger with the torch, let it cool for 30–60 seconds, apply the shatter with the tool, inhale slowly and cap it.
The cooling step is the part beginners skip. A glowing-hot banger scorches the concentrate, destroys the terpenes and tastes burnt. Lower temperature is better flavour — around 500–600°F rather than red hot.
Upside: best flavour, full control, most efficient. Downside: equipment, a blowtorch, and a learning curve.
Method 2 — A dab pen (easiest)
A portable battery with a coil or ceramic chamber. Load a small amount, press the button, inhale.
No torch, no rig, no risk of scorching. Flavour is not as good as a well-run rig and the chambers need regular cleaning, but for most people starting out this is the sensible entry point.
If you want the effect without any equipment at all, a disposable vape is the same idea pre-loaded — nothing to clean and nothing to learn.
Method 3 — In a joint or bowl
Works, wastes some product, requires nothing.
Break a small piece of shatter and either sprinkle it through your ground flower before rolling, or lay it on top of a packed bowl. The flower burns and the shatter melts into it.
Do not put shatter directly against the paper — it will run and you will lose it. Keep it in the middle of the flower. Expect some waste: combustion is far less efficient than vaporising.
Our joint rolling guide covers the rolling part.
Method 4 — Hot knives (don’t)
Heating two knives on a stove and pressing shatter between them. It works, and people did it for years before dab pens existed.
It is also a good way to burn yourself, scorch the concentrate, and inhale whatever is on your cutlery. There is no reason to do this in 2026 when a dab pen costs less than a night out. Listed for completeness, not as a recommendation.
How much to take
Start with a piece the size of a grain of rice. That sounds absurdly small. It is not.
Wait a full five minutes before considering more — unlike edibles the onset is fast, but it still takes a few minutes to reach full effect, and people stack dabs inside that window.
Shatter is brittle when cold and sticky when warm. Chilling it makes it far easier to break into small pieces; a dab tool and a cold surface are worth having.

Questions people actually ask
How strong is shatter compared to flower?
Shatter runs 60–90% THC against 20–30% for good flower — three to five times the concentration. A rice-grain dab can carry more THC than a whole joint.
Can I smoke shatter without a rig?
Yes. A dab pen is the easiest option, or you can sprinkle a small piece into a joint or on top of a bowl. Combustion wastes more product than vaporising, but it works and needs no equipment.
How much shatter should I start with?
A piece the size of a grain of rice, and wait five full minutes before taking more. It sounds too small. It is not.
What temperature should I dab at?
Around 500–600°F — heat the banger, then let it cool for 30 to 60 seconds before applying. A glowing-hot banger scorches the concentrate, destroys the terpenes and tastes burnt.
Why is my shatter sticky instead of brittle?
Temperature. Shatter is brittle when cold and sticky when warm. Chill it before handling and it breaks cleanly into small pieces.
Can I put shatter in a joint?
Yes — sprinkle small pieces through the ground flower before rolling. Keep it away from the paper itself, or it will run as it melts and you will lose it.
